Many patients recovering from a stroke, arthritis, cerebral palsy, or general deconditioning from long hospital stays suffer from loss of strength and the inability to independently move around. Thus, a Manual Patient Operated Wheelchair Rehabilitation Device helps patients move independently in a wheelchair.

In the efforts to support the Free Wheelchair Mission, our senior design project is aimed at applying a current model of a Manual Patient Operated Wheelchair Rehabilitation Device retrofitted into a “snap on and off version”, to a wheelchair supported by the FWM.

We are attempting to translate research validated cutting edge technology into a simple, cost effective device to be used in developing countries. Although there are many devices like this on the market, our device will be the first of its kind that can snap on and off the wheelchair, to resolve the issue of bulkiness and the difficulty of transportation.

The bigger picture of this senior design project is availability. We want to make this device available to patients of all backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses. By choosing to create the device that is fitted to the wheelchair used by FWM, we can target many developing countries who do not have the privilege and opportunity to invest in expensive devices for rehabilitation.
