The long term effects of concussions have been researched and debated heavily in the sports world over the last several years. Football has been at the center of these discussions because of the obvious violence in the sport and because of the National Football League’s large audience. The NCAA also recognized the issue of concussions in all of its major sports, but labeled water polo as a sport with low risk of concussions. This caught our attention because of personal experiences in water polo and the regularity of hits to the head in the sport.
The purpose of this project is to collect data on head impact forces to determine whether or not water polo players are at a significant risk of concussions or head injury. Once analyzing this data, the next goal would be to design and test new head gear alongside existing head gear to determine the effectiveness of the products in reducing impact magnitude to the head.
