In our last week, UAV Forge has made tangible progress since the beginning of the quarter: a frame and electronics housing. These final products exhibit the magnitude and scale of our work. During our last project meeting, the quarter grading session was scheduled on Saturday, where the teams meet with the Project Lead (Cheng) and Project Manager to discuss each …
Week 9: EECS Course Creation, New Tilt-Rotor Plane Base
UAV Forge has been a project that caters to many engineering departments, including MAE, EECS, and CompSci. The issue is, anyone in the EECS or CompSci, couldn’t receive design credit because there was no actual class in their discipline; there was MAE 195 but that was considered independent study. Ariel, the incoming Project Lead, contacted Professor Pai Chou, the administrator …
Week 8: Quadcopter Prototype Improvements, Electronics Wiring Discussion, and Pixhawk 2 Calibration
The Propulsion team worked on improving the quadcopter prototype. They successfully tested that the quad can “loiter” or hover in space while still adapting to the surrounding conditions. Before, the quad was drifting forward. During that previous test, Cheng found that the “trim” calibrator on the radio controller could fix the drifting temporary but it was a bad sign that …
Spring Week 7: Transitioning to MAVLink, Leadership
Progress was slow this week and the Project Lead, Cheng, took the time to teach Ariel and Kristen about the main aspects of UAV Forge. This includes the basic Pixhawk Mission Planner Software (the one Avionics didn’t program), preflight checklist procedures, the quadcopter configuration procedures, auto-flight testing, and flying the quadcopter prototype manually. Propulsion is purchasing a model tilt rotor …
Spring Week 6: Learning from Burnt Electronics, More Research
This week, UAV Forge is transitioning their leadership for the next school year. The new Project Leads will be Ariel from Mechanical Design and Kristen from Fabrication. Together, with the Purchasing, Safety, and Document Managers New project leads will determine how the project will continue its journey to completion. The Project Leads will pick the new team leads based on …
Spring Week 5: Completed Electric Housing and Wing Assembly
The Propulsion team was originally having trouble getting the tilt-rotor’s servos to rotate the correct direction and they have found a solution: using a programmable servo. The team is still working on replacing the servos on the tilt-rotor prototype. Because the replacement servos are different from the original ones, Propulsion must replace all the servos, on the left and right …
Spring Week 4: Wiring Issues Leads To Burnt Servos, Visualization of Obstacle Avoidance System
The Propulsion team performed their first flight test with the tandem tilt rotor prototype last Saturday. Unfortunately, the test failed and they burnt the 4 servos on left nacelle. They found that the power wires were in the wrong places and too much power was put into the servos. The replacement servos were on back order, so Propulsion ordered different …
Spring Week 3: Slow Work, Problem Solving Tilt Servos
So far, UAV Forge has been a little slow this week. On a side note, an important aspect of our project is the team-building. Every spring, UAV Forge makes team t-shirts for our members. It is a great opportunity to help the project feel united and to remember that we are working towards a common goal. The Propulsion team has …
Spring Week 2: Calibrating Tilt Rotor Motors and Programming Plane Commands
The project is up and running to get the plane assembled and flying. Propulsion was working on the tilt rotor’s motors and swash plates. They have synchronized the two motors’ speed so that they spin but they are not sure if the spinning is the same. The propellers must spin at the same rate (revolution per minute) to produce equal …
Spring 2017 Week 1 – Project Goal Revisited, Pushing for a Finished Model
Welcome back! Our first meeting of Spring 2018 begun with a review of our project goal and picking up where we left off last quarter. Before all that, our project leader Cheng announced that a transition in administration for the next school year will occur at the end of Spring. This transition is something for our members to keep in …
