The Baja SAE competition series is an annual challenge for college students to design, fabricate, and test off-road vehicles for a racing setting. Last year, the UCI Baja SAE team was proud to participate in competition against 99 other institutions despite the fact that the school had not developed a Baja car in ten years.
Even with just one season under our belt, we’ve already gained some insight about what it takes to succeed both as a project and as a competition participant. Our main goal is to complete all competition events without suffering more damage than a few scratches and dings, and our objectives stem from that goal. We aim to:
-Reduce vehicle weight by 70 lbs for greater nimbleness
-Shorten our wheelbase by 20 inches for greater steering response
-Toughen up our suspension system to prevent yielding
-Reduce our vehicle top speed to ~35 mph in the interest of more torque and acceleration
