As part of UCI’s earth week activities SPAM set up a booth demonstrating the utility of bike power. This public event debuted our new battery system as well as the light display that had only previously been seen at the Newport Beach Holiday Boat Parade.

We set out to help bring attention to our own research group as well as the sustainable ideas we hope to propagate as our community outreach continues.

We learned some important lessons. Our new batteries can withstand the heat! Throughout the day the temperature was in the mid to upper 80’s and our batteries maintained well below critical levels for peak energy performance.

We also learned that signage is key. While the light display attracted many eyes, without signage saying who we are or what we do only those who stopped by and used the bike left with more knowledge about our research team and the Speculative Prototyping Lab.

We can’t wait for our next event where we hope to premier our mobile printing system. TedX UC Irvine here we come!
