Autonomous Boat Week 5 Update

It’s week 5 and the team continuing the construction of the powertrain systems. The goal is to have the craft finished by the end of this quarter so that it can complete its journey from California to Catalina. We have everyone working on their own respective parts and the categories below best summarize the overall group’s effort.

Powertrain Assembly
-Roughly 40% of the work has been done on the powertrain.
-Engine has been mounted and bottom plate is being installed.

Steering Assembly
-Subteam has created rudder from steel plate from the CNC Balsa wood model created last week.
-Will be researching various actuators.

Control Systems
-Nothing much to report here other than the group is discussing waterproofing microcontrollers rather than purchasing a marine grade microcontroller. Marine grade microcontrollers are unattractive for this project due to budget constraints.
-The majority of controls will be later on in the project when the physical design is completed.

Energy Storage & Consumption
-Exploring cogeneration capabilities including thermoelectric couplers.
-Still analyzing potential options such as custom fuel bladders.

Design and Research / Other
-Continue research on propellor specifications for optimal performance and maximum torque.
-Propellor being selected for 6.5 HP engine.
-Waiting to hear back from UCI Communications Steve Chang about coverage on our project.

GOALS FOR THIS WEEK

Finish up the construction of the drive shaft system.
Come up with Solidworks stress analyses proving the model can handle the torque on the engine in a fluid.
Select propeller and have it ordered.
Come up with actuator system
