Walking Perturber Week 3 Meeting

gajuarez 2016-2017 Walking Perturber

For the group’s third meeting, we expanded on the brainstorming we had initiated the previous week. The main challenge we focused on during the meeting was figuring out how to create the perturbations. We narrowed our ideas from the previous meeting to three possible methods for creating a perturbation. The first method involves an air piston as the main actuator, the second involves a motor and masses, and the third method works upon the idea of creating perturbations that mimic the movement of water flowing inside a water bottle. Further into the meeting, we discussed the possibility of creating a rod and mass design with springs on either ends of the rod that would use gravity along with the weight of the mass as the means of creating the perturbation. Additionally, we discussed the possibility of combining this rod and mass design with the motor design idea previously brainstormed. The motor would be attached to the mass through a cable, and it would “wind up” the mass, pressing it against the mass. Upon release, the mass would launch forward and oscillate between the two springs that are on either side of the rod, thus creating a perturbation that would last a few moments. We also discussed the possibility of combing the piston design idea with the spring components from the rod and mass design idea. The piston would actuate, pushing the mass forward, which would then oscillate after coming into the spring. In addition, we discussed the idea of using a vest, body armor type design, which we would attach the actuator and other components onto. Lastly, we created a list of criteria to help us decide what design idea is the best. For our next meeting, we plan to further analyze the design ideas based on the criteria we created, in order to choose a design to use.
