Salutations!

My name is Tina Chau and I’m a 4th year Studio Art major with minors in Digital Arts and Digital Filmmaking. I enjoy experimenting with various mediums, but the two I prioritize for my studies at UCI are traditional drawing and digital filmmaking. The dream for me is to work for big name animation studios and/or live action film production studios, but for now I’m busy trying to figure myself out (as most people do in college) and paving a road that will hopefully lead to my dream job.

I stumbled upon this delicious wonderful group S.P.A.M. thanks to Professor Jesse Jackson, the mastermind that brought this group together. Engineering is probably one of the last fortes I’d be able to expertly offer to this group, but that’s okay! The expertise I’m here to offer is not of science/technology (though I’m more than happy to assist in those areas to the best of my ability), but of art. If there’s one thing I learned about art in my four years under UCI’s Arts program, it’s that there isn’t one, universal definition that can explain what art is or what its purpose is.

I can’t say I know the ultimate definition of “art” that everyone can agree on, but I can say that this group’s desire to combine engineers with artists to make something that attempts to shake things up in this world is a form of art in itself. That being said, I was more than happy to accept the opportunity to join S.P.A.M. because I fully support the group’s main, general goal of their project: to acknowledge and reduce waste on a planet that will inevitably turn into waste unless we take initiative. In a world that’s rapidly creating technology that in turn rapidly depletes our Earth’s resources, what can we do to maintain one without reducing the other? For many artworks that I’ve seen, many questions are asked, but few, if any, are successfully answered. I don’t know if our project will be the ideal answer to the question(s) we have raised, but I do know that it will be the first of many answers towards the right direction. Hopefully you can participate by following along with us on our journey!
