Week 2 Drone Tethering Team – Tension Controller

tomta9 2017-2018 Drone Tethering

Hi Everyone,

Here is a weekly update on the winter quarter progress of the drone tethering team. Last week, each member were assigned roles in 4 subteams, comprising of (1) the control system, (2) the circuitry, (3) the encapsulment, and (4) the reeling system design. The control team is responsible for implementing a PID control to provide constant tension on the wire to prevent any slack from accumulating. The circuit team is responsible for wiring the H-bridge, current sensor, Arduino board, and motor together. The encapsulment team will design a box that will automatically open and close at a click of a button, and used to house the quadcopter and reeling system in one space. Finally, the reeling team will design a gear system that will connect the motor shaft to the spool of the reeling system. Our goal will be to complete a MVP Prototype that will meet the requirements stated in our Fall Project Discovery Report.

This week, all teams are busy with designing and manufacturing our proof of concept, which we plan to have completed by this Friday. Here, you see the control and circuit team cooperating to ensure the code and circuitry are compatible with one another. As the design and manufacturing of the box is not needed for our proof of concept, members of the encapsulment team are aiding the reeling team in the completion of the gear and spool design.

Overall, our team is excited about our progress and will strive to continue seeking solutions to problems along the way.
